Summer Term 1 2025

Visit to Pizza Express

As part of our topic on Food in the Spring term, we finally went on our long awaited trip to Pizza Express. They showed us how to make delicious Margherita pizzas using freshly prepared ingredients: dough, tomato sauce and cheese. We also sprinkled some oregano over the top for extra taste. Whilst the pizzas were in the oven, we sampled some toppings, such as capers, olives, sun-dried tomatoes and peppers. We all took our delicious pizzas back to school ready to take home for our tea. Thank you Pizza Express for a lovely morning.

Our Victorian School day

We had a great day in school on Tuesday 6th May for our Victorian school day experience. We all got dressed up and Mrs Silver turned our classroom into a Victorian classroom! Before we were allowed in, we had to have a hand check to make sure they were clean. We lined up in separate girl and boy lines and sat separately in class, facing the board. There was a Dunce hat if you got a question wrong and a cane to keep us all in line. We did rote learning and used an ink pen to write carefully, trying not to smudge the paper. At break time, we had bread and cheese for snack before going out to play Victorian games of marbles, hopscotch, skipping and hoops. At the end, we all agreed  that schools have changed for the better since Victorian times.

SPRING TERM 2 2025

Tanzania

This term we have been learning about the African country of Tanzania. We were fortunate to be able to write to children in a rural school in Tanzania and ask them about their lives. We also wrote a fact-file on the animals that can be found in Tanzania.

SPRING TERM 1 2025

Winchester City Mill

As part of our topic on Food, we went to visit Winchester City Mill to see how flour is made. We learnt how the grain gets crushed between two mill stones to make the flour. We all had a go at grinding the grain ourselves and soon realised how difficult it would have been without the water mill to do the work for us. Thank you to the millers who showed us around and told us all about the mill's history.

Tomorrow, we are baking bread!

Chinese New Year Feast

To celebrate Chinese New Year, Carol from the village came in to cook Chinese food for the Robins. We had chicken and sweetcorn soup with rice and prawn crackers and everybody had a fortune cookie to take home. We learned that 2025 is the Year of the Snake, which is a symbol of happiness and good luck. The food was delicious and we are very grateful to Carol.

Planting potatoes

Robins have been busy planting potatoes and beans as part of out topic on Food. We have been reading Oliver's Vegetables by Vivian French and now want to make chips from the potatoes!

Making Chips

First, we all had to wash our hands and put on an apron. Then we got a potato peeler and peeled off the skin. Carefully, we used knives to cut the potato into chips. Afterwards, we used an air fryer to cook the potatoes and watch them turn into delicious chips! We all enjoyed tasting them. Chips are delicious!

AUTUMN TERM 2 2024

Fire Engines

As part of our learning on The Great Fire of London, we explored modern fire engines and their features, looking at what features are common to all vehicles and which are specific to fire engines.  We also had a look at a 17th century fire engine to compare how they are similar and different to modern fire engines. We explored how wheels, axles and chassis work together to create the base of a fire engine.

We then designed our own fire engines, based on the learning we have undertaken so far.  We considered which materials and tools we needed. We followed our designs to create our fire engines. We finished off by evaluating how well we think we did and what we could improve on.

Surprise Visit

As part of our topic on The Great Fire of London, we had a surprise visit from the fire brigade. We had a tour of the fire engine and a talk from one of the firemen who told us all about the equipment on the engine. We compared how different tackling fires was today compared to 1666. We were also very lucky to be allowed to handle some of the equipment and understand how heavy they are.

Forest School Fun

Year 1 and 2 are very lucky to have the wonderful experience of doing Forest School every Thursday afternoon this term.

We love being outdoors and making the most of what the school grounds has to offer, We have been identifying the trees, looking at all the beautiful array of colours before having time to do an activity of our choosing. We enjoyed make natural colour dyes from berries and leaves or potions from herbs. We can also explore the forest by digging and making dens as well as building things from twigs and sticks.

AUTUMN TERM 1 2024

Robins visit to Marwell Zoo

To end of our topic on All About Me, we have been learning about animals. We have been learning about how to care for our pets and how animals are different from each other. We have been able to sort and classify animals and a trip to Marwell Zoo was an amazing way to extend our learning further.

We were also very lucky to see an eight week old giraffe and we asked and answered lots of questions with the help of one of the zoo keepers.

ALL About Me

As part of our topic, All About Me, the children have been learning about how special our birthdays are. Our class bear, Sam was 5, so they all made birthday invitations for their teddies and we planned a birthday party which we all enjoyed.
